Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that can cause infections in skin, hair, and nails, known as dermatophytosis. These fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, and their infections typically present as red, scaly patches on the skin or as brittle, discolored nails. Dermatophyte infections are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact or indirectly through contaminated surfaces.Â
Microscopy and culture methods for diagnosing dermatophyte infections are time-consuming and can take several weeks to yield results, often with lower sensitivity. The use of TandemPlex™ PCR enables rapid, highly sensitive, and specific detection of pathogens, allowing for quicker and more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Advantages of Molecular Dermatophyte Diagnostics with Patented TandemPlex™ Technology:Â
- Speed:Â Reduced from 4 – 6 weeks to 4 – 6 hours.
- Highest Sensitivity and Specificity:Â More accurate detection of dermatophytes.
- Automation and Scalability:Â Suitable for individual sample throughput with our semi-automated workflow.
- Reduced Need for Laboratory Personnel Time:Â More efficient processing.
More than 55 species of dermatophytes are identified as causing infections, yet not every individual species necessitates a distinct treatment approach. Utilizing the TandemPlex® Panel REF 84115 Dermatophytes and other fungi from AusDiagnostics, 95% of clinically significant dermatophytes can be identified at the species or complex level, facilitating precise treatment with the utmost specificity. Through its genus-level targets, the panel achieves high sensitivity, ensuring comprehensive detection of all relevant pathogens.
