Dermatological Infections

Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that can cause infections in skin, hair, and nails, known as dermatophytosis. These fungi thrive in warm and moist environments and their infections typically present as red, scaly patches on the skin or as brittle, discolored nails. Dermatophyte infections are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact or indirectly through contaminated surfaces. 

PCR testing for dermatophytes offers rapid and accurate detection by amplifying specific fungal DNA from clinical samples. It is more sensitive than traditional methods like culture or microscopy, allowing for early diagnosis and targeted treatment. PCR also distinguishes between different dermatophyte species, guiding appropriate therapy and preventing the spread of infection.  

More than 40 species of dermatophytes are identified as causing infections, yet not every individual species necessitates a distinct treatment approach. Utilizing the TandemPlex® Panel REF 84115 for Dermatophytes and other fungi from AusDiagnostics, 94% (compared to recent clinical findings*) of clinically significant dermatophytes can be identified at the species level, facilitating precise treatment with the utmost specificity. Through its genus-level targets, the panel achieves high sensitivity, ensuring comprehensive detection of all relevant pathogens.
