Infections with parasites are very common in tropical climate regions and become more important in non-tropical areas due to returning travelers. They are triggered by ingesting contaminated water or food and patients with clinical symptoms often suffer from diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting and fever.

Parasitic infections are caused by three types of organisms: protozoa, helminths and ectoparasites. The most important diarrhea-causing protozoa include Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium spp. and Entamoeba histolytica.

Due to the ease of spread, fast and reliable diagnosis of a parasitic infection at an early stage is crucial for an effective therapy. Immunoassays and molecular diagnostics enable the detection and differentiation of parasitic infections earlier than conventional methods, such a microscopy.
