But what about multiple, atypical, hidden, or asymptomatic infections? Here, laboratory testing is required for confirmation of the identity of the infectious agent. Depending on the pathogen, aspects such as prognosis, treatment protocol and control measures are influenced by the diagnosis. In addition, identifying the pathogen will facilitate monitoring and prevent the spread of the disease.

Diagnostic virology involves two aproaches, detection of the virus itself and characterization of the host antibody response to the infecting virus.
