Gastrointestinal infections are viral, bacterial or parasitic infections that cause gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract involving the stomach, small intestine and colon. Typical symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Diarrheal disease is a major health care problem causing about 2 billion gastroenteritis cases worldwide and with diarrhea being the second most common cause of death in children under the age of 5. In many cases, gastrointestinal infections are self-limiting and resolve within a few days. In healthcare settings and in specific populations like newborns/infants, immunocompromised patients and in the elderly, they are potentially serious.

Gastrointestinal infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites. The clinical symptoms are nearly identical. Thus, it is difficult and nearly impossible to determine the pathogenic cause on the basis of clinical features alone.

Rapid diagnosis, appropriate treatment and infection control are important measures in these contexts. We offer different test systems for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal infections including ELISA, real-time PCR, rapid tests, blots and the new microspot array. Real-time PCR allows for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of viral, bacterial and parasitic gastrointestinal pathogens.

We offer diagnostic tests for the detection of a large number of pathogens:

  • Viruses including Adenovirus, Astrovirus, Enterovirus, Norovirus, Rotavirus, Sapovirus
  • Bacteria including Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium difficile, E. coli, Helicobacter pylori, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia enterocolitica
  • Parasites including Cryptosporidium parvum, Dientamoeba fragilis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia.
